Overview

This drug is a **combination regimen** comprising **nevirapine**, a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), plus one or more **nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)** for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Nevirapine acts by directly binding to and inhibiting the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme, thereby blocking viral RNA from being transcribed into DNA. NRTIs, which might include agents such as zidovudine, lamivudine, or didanosine, work by being incorporated into the viral DNA during replication, causing chain termination. This combination forms a core part of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and has been shown to significantly reduce HIV viral load and increase CD4 cell counts when used together. Nevirapine-based combination regimens are effective but often replaced by alternatives in high-resource settings due to toxicity risks and resistance concerns, yet still widely used in specific populations and regions due to cost and availability.
