This combination antiretroviral regimen consists of nevirapine, zidovudine (ZDV), and lamivudine (3TC). It was specifically evaluated by the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) in the PHPT-5 clinical trial for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV-1. Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), while zidovudine and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Together, they target the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme to block the conversion of viral RNA into DNA, thereby preventing viral replication. The PHPT-5 trial focused on intensifying perinatal prophylaxis in Thai women who received short-duration prenatal highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The study was terminated in 2010 following changes in clinical guidelines that recommended HAART for all HIV-infected pregnant women.
