Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The New Oral Rehydration Solution (N-ORS) is an investigational electrolyte and carbohydrate replacement therapy developed and tested by researchers at Augusta University for the treatment of dehydration associated with viral gastroenteritis in adults. Unlike standard sports drinks or some commercial rehydration products, this solution is specifically formulated with optimized concentrations of sodium, potassium, and carbohydrates to leverage the sodium-glucose cotransport mechanism in the small intestine, facilitating rapid fluid absorption. In clinical trials, the N-ORS demonstrated comparable efficacy to Pedialyte in correcting dehydration and improving bowel symptoms while offering superior palatability, which may enhance patient compliance in outpatient settings.
