Overview

Newcastle disease virus (NDV), also known as avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1), is a single-stranded negative-sense RNA virus in the family Paramyxoviridae. It is the causative agent of Newcastle disease—a highly contagious and often severe viral infection affecting birds worldwide. NDV exists in three main pathotypes based on virulence in chickens: lentogenic (mild), mesogenic (moderate), and velogenic (highly virulent). Velogenic strains are responsible for major outbreaks with high mortality rates in poultry[1][2][4]. Lentogenic strains are widely used as live vaccines to prevent Newcastle disease[6][7]. The primary mechanism of action for vaccine use is induction of protective immunity against NDV through exposure to attenuated or inactivated viral antigens. In research settings and experimental cancer therapy contexts, NDV has been explored as an oncolytic agent due to its ability to selectively replicate in and kill certain tumor cells while sparing normal tissues[3].
