Newcastle disease virus Italien

Newcastle disease virus Italien (NDV Italien) is a velogenic (highly virulent) strain of Newcastle disease virus, a paramyxovirus with demonstrated *oncolytic* (cancer-killing) properties. NDV Italien replicates selectively in tumor cells, exploiting defective antiviral responses in many cancers to induce cell death via direct lysis and syncytium formation. Recombinant versions of NDV Italien have been developed as platforms for gene and oncolytic virotherapy research, with insertions of reporter genes demonstrating preserved viral replication and tumor selectivity. This strain is under investigation as a potential anticancer agent due to its ability to preferentially infect and kill tumor cells in vitro and extend survival in mouse tumor models. NDV, including the Italien strain, is considered generally safe for humans, causing only mild symptoms if any, but is pathogenic to birds[1][3][7].
