NewRal is an investigational personalized, autologous engineered neural tissue transplant being developed by Matricelf for the treatment of traumatic spinal cord injury. The therapy is designed to repair damaged neural tissue and restore signal transmission across the injured spinal cord. NewRal is produced by combining patient-derived cellular components, specifically induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), with a biomaterial hydrogel scaffold derived from the patient's own omentum tissue. The iPSCs are embedded within this personalized extracellular matrix and guided through a controlled differentiation process to form functional 3D neural tissue spheroids. This autologous transplant is designed to be implanted at the site of injury following scar tissue clearance, bridging the damaged spinal tissue to restore motor and sensory function. As of late 2026, NewRal is in preclinical development, with the company preparing for an Investigational New Drug (IND) submission following positive written feedback from the FDA regarding its proposed first-in-human clinical trial design.
