Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NEX-18 is a long-acting, injectable depot formulation of azacitidine developed using Nanexa's proprietary PharmaShell drug delivery technology. The aim of NEX-18 is to simplify the treatment regimen for patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a hematological cancer primarily affecting the elderly, by reducing the current standard of seven daily subcutaneous injections per month to a single monthly injection. The PharmaShell coating enables controlled and sustained release of azacitidine over several weeks, potentially reducing acute side effects associated with high initial drug concentrations and improving patient convenience and adherence. Clinical development was paused due to moderate skin reactions at the injection site; subsequent preclinical studies identified potential solutions, and reformulation efforts are ongoing[1][2][3][4][6].
