Nexocyte islets are an investigational bioprinted cell therapy being developed by Fluicell for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. The therapy utilizes Fluicell's proprietary Biopixlar high-resolution bioprinting technology and Nexocyte platform to create artificial pancreatic islets that mimic the complex architecture of native islets of Langerhans. These engineered tissues consist of precisely arranged insulin-producing beta cells, glucagon-producing alpha cells, and supporting cells, currently derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The bioprinted islets are designed to be encapsulated within a transplantable biomaterial that protects the cells from the host's immune system while allowing for the exchange of nutrients, glucose, and hormones. The primary therapeutic goal is to restore endogenous insulin production and achieve long-term glycemic control, potentially reducing or eliminating the dependency on external insulin administration.
