Primevera Therapeutics is developing a next-generation small molecule inhibitor of Matrix Metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12), also known as macrophage elastase. MMP-12 is a proteolytic enzyme primarily secreted by macrophages that plays a critical role in the degradation of extracellular matrix components, particularly elastin. Dysregulation of MMP-12 is implicated in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory and fibrotic conditions. Primevera's program targets Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD), where MMP-12 activity contributes to alveolar destruction and fibrosis, as well as Neurologic disorders, where it is involved in neuroinflammation and blood-brain barrier compromise. By selectively inhibiting MMP-12, the therapy aims to mitigate tissue damage and disease progression. The program is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
