Overview
Next Generation Ophthalmic Irrigating Solution (NGOIS) is an advanced intraocular irrigating solution developed by Alcon for use during complex ophthalmic surgical procedures, such as vitrectomy, epimacular membrane removal, and cataract surgery. It is designed as an improved formulation of the standard-of-care BSS Plus (Balanced Salt Solution Plus). NGOIS is formulated to maintain the physiological integrity of intraocular tissues, particularly the corneal endothelium and the retina, during prolonged surgical exposure. Like its predecessor, it likely contains a balanced mixture of essential electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride), a bicarbonate buffer system, and metabolic supports such as dextrose and glutathione to provide antioxidant protection and energy to ocular cells. The development of NGOIS focuses on optimizing the stability and safety profile of the solution, potentially through a more convenient single-bottle formulation compared to the traditional two-part mixing requirement of BSS Plus.
