NF-GQDs (Non-functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots) are a type of graphene nanoparticle being investigated for their potential in enhancing chemotherapy for glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive brain cancer. These nanoparticles have demonstrated high biocompatibility and the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Their mechanism of action involves altering cell membrane permeability, which facilitates the uptake of chemotherapeutic agents, such as doxorubicin, into cancer cells (U87 human glioblastoma cells) without significantly affecting cortical neurons. This synergistic effect aims to increase the efficacy of chemotherapy while potentially reducing the required drug dose and associated side effects.
