Overview

NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) is a synthetic analog of L-arginine that acts as a competitive inhibitor of all three isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS): neuronal NOS (nNOS), endothelial NOS (eNOS), and inducible NOS (iNOS). By inhibiting these enzymes, it blocks the synthesis of nitric oxide from L-arginine. This mechanism has been used in research to study the physiological roles of nitric oxide in vascular tone regulation and immune response. Clinically, L-NMMA has been investigated for its potential to treat conditions such as septic shock and triple-negative breast cancer by modulating NO-mediated pathways[1][2][4][5][6][7][10].
