Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Niacin, also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid, is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin essential for human health. It plays a critical role in energy metabolism by helping convert food into usable energy and is necessary for the proper function of the nervous system, digestive system, and skin. At higher therapeutic doses, niacin acts as an antihyperlipidemic agent: it lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while raising HDL cholesterol. Niacin is FDA-approved to treat pellagra (niacin deficiency), hyperlipidemia, mixed dyslipidemia, severe hypertriglyceridemia, and to reduce the risk of nonfatal myocardial infarction in patients with a history of heart attack and high cholesterol. It may be used alone or in combination with statins or bile acid-binding resins[1][2][3][7][8].
