Niacinamide butyrate is a butyrate-based ionic liquid (IL) composed of a niacinamide (nicotinamide) cation and a butyrate anion. It is primarily investigated as a functional pharmaceutical ingredient or solvent to enhance the oral bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of poorly soluble drugs, such as glycyrol. Beyond its role as a delivery vehicle, it exhibits intrinsic biological activity; butyrate acts as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor and a source of energy for colonocytes, while niacinamide is a precursor to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+).
