Overview
Niaodukang (NDK) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula (mixture) primarily used for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its associated complications, including chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) and intestinal barrier dysfunction. The preparation is composed of five botanical ingredients: *Rheum officinale*, *Salvia miltiorrhiza*, *Astragalus membranaceus* (or *Astragalus aaronii*), *Carthamus tinctorius*, and *Sanguisorba officinalis*. NDK functions by reducing serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels, suppressing systemic micro-inflammation, and restoring the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier. Its molecular mechanism involves the modulation of the miR-146a/NF-κB signaling pathway and the inhibition of the TRAF3/NF-κB2 pathway. Formononetin, a flavonoid derived from *Astragalus*, has been identified as a principal bioactive compound contributing to its therapeutic effects.
