Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Niaouli oil is an essential oil derived from the leaves of the *Melaleuca quinquenervia* (also known as *Melaleuca viridiflora*) tree. It is rich in compounds such as 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), a-pinene, limonene, and viridiflorol[4][5]. Niaouli oil exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties[5][7][8]. Its primary uses are for respiratory conditions such as nasal congestion and rhinorrhea[3], coughs and bronchitis[2], as well as topical applications for skin infections including acne and wounds[4][6]. The mechanism of action is believed to involve stimulation of blood circulation and inhibition or destruction of bacteria, viruses, and fungi through its active constituents like cineole[2][7]. Niaouli oil should not be confused with tea tree or cajeput oils which come from different *Melaleuca* species. It is used both in aromatherapy/cosmetic products and occasionally in traditional medicine for its immune-stimulating effects. Excessive oral intake can cause serious adverse effects including low blood pressure or breathing problems; topical use may cause irritation especially in children or sensitive individuals[1][2].
