nicarbazin

**Nicarbazin** is a synthetic veterinary anticoccidial used primarily in medicated poultry feed to prevent intestinal and caecal coccidiosis caused by *Eimeria* species in broiler chickens. It is an equimolar physical-chemical complex of 4,4′-dinitrocarbanilide and 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine. Its precise molecular target has not been definitively established, but it is understood to disrupt *Eimeria* mitochondrial energy metabolism and parasite replication, with pronounced activity against later intracellular schizont and merozoite stages. Nicarbazin is also used in avian contraceptive bait products for pigeon population management, where it reduces egg hatchability by disrupting egg fertilization-related processes.
