Nickel sulfate hexahydrate is an inorganic compound with the formula NiSO4·6H2O. It is a blue crystalline solid and the most common form of hydrated nickel sulfate. Nickel sulfate hexahydrate is primarily used as an intermediate in the production of nickel alloys and as a hydrogenation catalyst[4]. In medicine, it is mainly used for allergenic testing (patch tests) to diagnose contact allergy to nickel[2][8]. Mechanistically, its biological effects are related to its role as a skin sensitizer and potential occupational toxin; it can induce allergic reactions in the skin (contact dermatitis), asthma via bronchoconstriction upon inhalation of dust or fumes, toxic pneumonitis (lung inflammation), and other irritant effects on eyes and respiratory tract[1][5]. Chronic exposure may lead to lung inflammation and fibrosis. There is no evidence for carcinogenicity in animal studies at tested doses[1].
