Overview
Niclosamide Inhalation Powder (TFF-001) is an investigational dry powder formulation of the anthelmintic drug niclosamide, developed by TFF Pharmaceuticals using its proprietary Thin Film Freezing (TFF) technology. Designed specifically for the treatment of COVID-19, the TFF process transforms niclosamide into an inhalable powder that is delivered directly to the lungs, the primary site of SARS-CoV-2 infection. This approach aims to overcome the poor oral bioavailability of niclosamide and achieve high therapeutic concentrations in pulmonary tissue while minimizing systemic exposure and gastrointestinal side effects. Niclosamide's mechanism of action involves the inhibition of host-cell pathways essential for viral replication, which may provide a high barrier to the development of viral resistance and maintain efficacy against multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants.
