Nicofuranose is a nicotinic acid derivative that serves as a prodrug of niacin (nicotinic acid). Chemically, it is the tetranicotinic acid ester of fructose, specifically 1,3,4,6-tetranicotinoyl-fructofuranose. It was historically used as an antihyperlipidemic agent and a peripheral vasodilator. By slowly releasing nicotinic acid into the bloodstream upon hydrolysis, nicofuranose helps to mitigate the intense cutaneous flushing often associated with immediate-release nicotinic acid formulations.
