nicorandil

Nicorandil is a small molecule antianginal drug used primarily for the prevention and treatment of chronic stable angina pectoris. It acts as both a potassium channel opener (specifically ATP-sensitive potassium channels) and a nitrate donor. Through these dual mechanisms, nicorandil causes vasodilation of both arterial and venous vessels—relaxing vascular smooth muscle to increase coronary blood flow and reduce cardiac preload and afterload. The activation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels leads to hyperpolarization of smooth muscle cells, while the nitrate moiety increases cyclic GMP levels via stimulation of guanylate cyclase, further promoting vasodilation.
