The Niconovum nicotine oral pouch (marketed under the brand name Zonnic) is a tobacco-free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) designed to assist with smoking cessation and relieve acute tobacco withdrawal symptoms. Originally developed by the Swedish pharmaceutical company Niconovum AB (now a subsidiary of British American Tobacco), the product consists of a small, discrete pouch containing flavored nicotine bound to cellulose and food-grade additives. When placed between the lip and gum, nicotine is rapidly absorbed through the buccal mucosa. Nicotine acts as an agonist on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the central and peripheral nervous systems, mimicking the effects of tobacco-derived nicotine to reduce cravings without exposing the user to the harmful combustion products of smoking.
