Overview

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in the context of the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group's Smoke-Free Support Study 2.0 (EAQ171CD) involves the use of FDA-approved nicotine patches and lozenges to facilitate smoking cessation in patients recently diagnosed with cancer. Nicotine acts as a small molecule agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the brain, providing a controlled dose of nicotine to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms and cravings associated with tobacco cessation. In this Phase II trial, NRT is delivered as part of a Virtual Intervention Treatment (VIT) arm, which combines up to 12 weeks of pharmacotherapy with virtual counseling sessions. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this integrated, community-based tobacco treatment approach compared to standard quitline referrals.
