Overview

**Nicotine transdermal system** is an extended-release transdermal nicotine-replacement therapy used to reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings during smoking cessation. It delivers nicotine steadily through the skin over approximately 16 or 24 hours, avoiding the rapid nicotine peaks associated with cigarette smoking. Nicotine is an agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and sustained replacement exposure helps mitigate withdrawal while a person stops tobacco use. In NCT02927847, nicotine patches were used as pharmacologic pretreatment alongside very-low-nicotine-content cigarettes and behavioral interventions; Maggie M. Sweitzer, PhD was the trial principal investigator rather than the originator of nicotine as a drug product.
