Overview

Nicotinyl alcohol is a small molecule niacin (nicotinic acid) derivative used primarily as a peripheral vasodilator and hypolipidemic agent. It acts by directly dilating blood vessels, leading to increased blood flow and decreased blood pressure, and is used in the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases such as arteriosclerosis obliterans, Raynaud's disease, thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease), arterial embolism, chilblains, or migraine associated with vascular spasm. Its mechanism of action involves direct vasodilation through relaxation of smooth muscle in the vessel wall. Nicotinyl alcohol also decreases the formation and secretion of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) by the liver via inhibition of fatty acid mobilization from adipose tissue[1][2][6][8]. Common side effects include flushing and warmth or redness of the skin[4]. It was developed to provide longer-lasting vasodilatory effects compared to nicotinic acid.
