Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nicotrol NS is a nicotine nasal spray formulation being investigated as an add-on therapy for motor and non-motor symptoms in patients with intermediate-stage Parkinson's disease. Developed for this indication by El Instituto Nacional de Neurologia y Neurocirugia Manuel Velasco Suarez, the drug delivers nicotine in a pulsatile manner to stimulate central nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). This pulsatile delivery is hypothesized to be more effective than continuous delivery (like patches) by mimicking the nicotine kinetics of smoking, which epidemiological studies suggest has a neuroprotective effect against Parkinson's disease. The formulation contains 10 mg/mL of nicotine, delivering 0.5 mg per spray.
