Nifedipine is a small molecule drug in the dihydropyridine subclass of calcium channel blockers. It is primarily used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina pectoris (chest pain), including both chronic stable angina and vasospastic angina. Nifedipine works by inhibiting L-type voltage-gated calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle and myocardial cells. This action reduces peripheral arterial resistance and dilates coronary arteries by preventing the influx of calcium ions during depolarization. The result is relaxation of blood vessels (vasodilation), decreased cardiac workload, increased oxygen supply to the heart muscle, and reduced blood pressure[1][2][4][5]. Nifedipine may also be used off-label for conditions such as Raynaud's phenomenon and anal fissures[7]. It is available as immediate-release capsules or extended-release tablets taken orally.
