Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nifedipine + candesartan cilexetil is a fixed-dose combination of two antihypertensive agents used for the treatment of hypertension. Nifedipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that inhibits the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, resulting in vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. Candesartan cilexetil is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) prodrug that, once converted to its active form (candesartan), selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to AT1 receptors in various tissues, leading to vasodilation and decreased aldosterone secretion. The combination provides additive blood pressure-lowering effects with improved efficacy compared to monotherapy, as demonstrated in clinical studies. It also offers an improved side effect profile relative to higher doses of either agent alone[1][3][5].
