Overview
Niflumic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the fenamate class, primarily used for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties in the treatment of musculoskeletal and joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It acts mainly by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX), particularly COX-2, thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis responsible for inflammation, pain, and fever. Additionally, it inhibits phospholipase A2 and blocks calcium-activated chloride channels. In experimental settings, it has also been shown to affect GABA-A receptors, NMDA channels, T-type calcium channels, and other ion channels[1][2][5][6][8]. The drug is available in oral and topical formulations.
