nifurtoinol

Nifurtoinol is a nitrofuran-derivative antibiotic used primarily for the treatment of urinary tract infections. It is bactericidal against most gram-positive and gram-negative urinary tract pathogens. As a member of the nitrofuran class, it acts as an antiinfective agent and antibacterial drug. Its mechanism involves bacterial enzyme-mediated reduction of its nitro group, leading to the formation of reactive intermediates that damage bacterial DNA and other macromolecules. Nifurtoinol is administered orally and is excreted renally, with 40–50% eliminated within the first 12 hours.
