Overview

Nilutamide is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen used primarily in the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer. It acts by competitively inhibiting the binding of androgens, such as testosterone, to the androgen receptor, thereby blocking androgen-driven growth of both normal and malignant prostatic tissue. Nilutamide does not possess other hormonal activities (such as estrogenic or glucocorticoid effects) and is typically administered alongside surgical or chemical castration to enhance therapeutic efficacy. Its mechanism results in growth arrest or regression of androgen-dependent tumors through inhibition of DNA and protein synthesis. Nilutamide has also been studied for use in feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women.
