Nilvadipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily to treat hypertension and other vascular disorders such as Prinzmetal's angina and Raynaud's phenomenon. It acts by selectively blocking L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. Compared to other dihydropyridines like nifedipine, nilvadipine has higher vascular selectivity, a longer duration of action, and less cardiodepressive effect. It has also been investigated for potential disease-modifying effects in Alzheimer's disease due to its ability to reduce amyloid production, increase cerebral blood flow, and exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-tau activity in preclinical studies[1][3][5][7].
