nimesulide

**Nimesulide** is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the sulfonanilide class, with relatively selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX‑2). It possesses analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Its mechanism involves inhibition of COX‑2 mediated prostaglandin synthesis and modulation of other inflammatory mediators such as free radicals, proteolytic enzymes, histamine release from mast cells, and platelet activating factor production. It is used for acute pain management, symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis, and primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents and adults over 12 years old. Due to concerns about hepatotoxicity risk—including rare but severe liver injury—nimesulide has been withdrawn from several markets but remains available in many countries across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere.
