Nimorazole is a synthetic 5-nitroimidazole compound with antimicrobial activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, similar to metronidazole. It also acts as a radiosensitizer by mimicking oxygen, thereby inducing free radical formation and sensitizing hypoxic tumor cells to the cytotoxic effects of ionizing radiation. Nimorazole has been used in the treatment of infections such as trichomoniasis, amoebiasis, giardiasis, and acute ulcerative gingivitis. In oncology, it is primarily investigated for use alongside radiotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), where it selectively targets hypoxic tumor cells that are otherwise resistant to radiation[1][2][3][4][6]. Its use as a radiosensitizer has shown improved locoregional control in clinical trials for head and neck cancers[6].
