Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**NimoVent** is a novel formulation of the calcium channel blocker **nimodipine** developed by Edge Therapeutics for administration via external ventricular drainage (EVD) tubes in patients following subarachnoid hemorrhage or brain surgery. Nimodipine selectively inhibits L-type voltage-gated calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, preferentially dilating cerebral arteries to improve collateral blood flow, reduce ischemic deficits, and prevent neuronal calcium overload. This targeted delivery approach aims to enhance efficacy while minimizing systemic exposure compared to oral or intravenous forms, with development focused on safety, toxicity studies, and Phase IIa dose escalation trials as of 2011.[8]
