Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Niosomal salbutamol sulphate is a novel nano-vesicular formulation of the selective short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist salbutamol sulphate, developed by researchers at the British University in Egypt. This formulation utilizes niosomes—non-ionic surfactant vesicles prepared with Span 60 and cholesterol—as a drug delivery system to entrap the active ingredient. Designed for administration via a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) using hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant, the niosomal structure is intended to provide controlled and sustained pulmonary drug delivery. By targeting beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the lungs, it induces bronchodilation, making it a candidate for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A Phase 1 study has been conducted to evaluate its relative bioavailability compared to standard salbutamol inhalers.
