Overview
NIRFOL is an intravenous emulsion for injection containing propofol, a short-acting general anesthetic. Developed and marketed by the Uzbekistan-based pharmaceutical company Shayana Farm, NIRFOL is used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in adults and children aged one month and older. It is also indicated for the sedation of ventilated patients in intensive care units (ICU). The drug exerts its effects by potentiating the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor complex, which increases chloride ion conductance and leads to hyperpolarization of the postsynaptic membrane, resulting in a loss of consciousness and sedation.
