Nirsevimab is a long-acting recombinant human IgG1 kappa monoclonal antibody indicated for the prevention of lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in neonates and infants during their first RSV season, and in children up to 24 months of age who remain vulnerable to severe RSV disease through their second RSV season. It provides passive immunity by binding with high affinity to a conserved epitope (site Ø) on the prefusion conformation of the RSV F protein, thereby inhibiting conformational changes necessary for viral fusion and entry into host cells. Nirsevimab’s Fc region contains modifications that extend its half-life, allowing protection throughout an entire RSV season with a single intramuscular dose. Developed as an alternative to palivizumab, it offers greater potency and longer duration of action[1][2][3][5][7].
