Overview

Nisoldipine is a 1,4-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily for the management of hypertension. It acts by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions through voltage-gated L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation and reduced peripheral vascular resistance. This mechanism decreases systemic blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand while increasing oxygen delivery to cardiac tissue. Nisoldipine is more potent as a vasodilator than nifedipine and can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents such as ACE inhibitors, diuretics, or beta-blockers. Off-label, it may be used for ischemic heart conditions like stable angina and Prinzmetal angina[1][2][3][5][6].
