Overview

Nitarsone is an organoarsenic compound primarily used as a veterinary drug and feed additive in poultry production. Its main indications were to promote weight gain, improve feed efficiency, and prevent histomoniasis (blackhead disease) in turkeys and chickens. Nitarsone acts as an antiprotozoal agent by disrupting ATP production in protozoa through interference with metabolic pathways[6][8]. It was marketed under the brand name Histostat by Zoetis, a subsidiary of Pfizer[1][3][4]. Nitarsone was the only arsenical animal drug approved for use in food animals in the United States after other similar drugs were withdrawn; however, its approval for use in animal feeds was also withdrawn by the FDA at the end of 2015 due to concerns about arsenic exposure[3][4][7]. The compound is classified as a small molecule.
