Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nitenpyram is a small molecule neonicotinoid insecticide used primarily in veterinary medicine to treat adult flea infestations in dogs and cats. It acts as a neurotoxin by binding to and blocking nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system of insects, leading to paralysis and rapid death of adult fleas. Nitenpyram is administered orally as a tablet and begins killing fleas within 30 minutes of administration; it achieves over 90% effectiveness against adult fleas on dogs within 4 hours and on cats within 6 hours. Its effects last for about 24–48 hours. Nitenpyram does not affect flea eggs or larvae and does not provide long-term prevention but is valued for its rapid action against existing infestations[1][2][3][5][7].
