Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nitrate-enriched beetroot extract is a concentrated dietary supplement derived from the root of the beet plant (*Beta vulgaris*), specifically standardized for high levels of inorganic nitrate (NO3-). It functions as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO) through the enterosalivary nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Upon ingestion, nitrate is absorbed and then secreted into the saliva, where commensal oral bacteria reduce it to nitrite (NO2-). In the acidic environment of the stomach or under conditions of low oxygen in the tissues, nitrite is further converted into nitric oxide and S-nitrosothiols (RSNO). These molecules act as potent vasodilators, improving endothelial function, reducing blood pressure, and enhancing mitochondrial efficiency. Clinical research, including studies in overweight individuals and those with metabolic disorders, focuses on its potential to mitigate cardiovascular risk and improve exercise tolerance.
