Nitrazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine used primarily for the short-term treatment of insomnia and the management of certain types of seizures such as myoclonic seizures. It acts as a powerful hypnotic with strong sedative properties and also exhibits anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), amnestic (impairing memory), anticonvulsant (preventing seizures), and skeletal muscle relaxant effects. The drug works by binding to central benzodiazepine receptors that are associated with gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptors in the brain. This enhances GABA's inhibitory effect on neuronal activity leading to sedation and CNS depression. Additionally—especially at higher doses or in specific contexts—nitrazepam may exert anticonvulsant effects through interaction with voltage-dependent sodium channels by slowing their recovery from inactivation. It is metabolized hepatically and has a risk for abuse and dependence. Developed by Roche.
