Overview

Nitrazolam is a highly potent triazolobenzodiazepine (TBZD), a subclass of benzodiazepines. It is considered a "designer drug" and has been sold online primarily for research purposes rather than approved medical use. Nitrazolam acts as a central nervous system depressant with sedative, hypnotic (sleep-inducing), anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing), muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant properties typical of benzodiazepines. Its mechanism involves positive allosteric modulation of the GABAA receptor complex in the brain. Nitrazolam is structurally related to other benzodiazepines such as clonazolam and flunitrazolam but lacks certain halogen substitutions present in those compounds. It has been reported to be several times more potent than diazepam in animal models for some effects but less potent for others. The drug is metabolized primarily by reduction and hydroxylation in the liver; both parent compound and metabolites are excreted via urine[1][2][5]. Nitrazolam has not been approved by regulatory agencies like the FDA or EMA for any therapeutic indication.
