Overview

Nitric oxide + nitrogen refers to a combination of two gases. Nitric oxide (NO) is a vasodilating agent used primarily as an inhaled therapy for the treatment of hypoxic respiratory failure and persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns. It acts by relaxing vascular smooth muscle through stimulation of soluble guanylate cyclase, leading to increased cyclic GMP and subsequent vasodilation in the pulmonary circulation[1][2][3][4]. Nitrogen is an inert gas commonly used as a carrier or diluent in medical gas mixtures but does not have direct pharmacological activity. The primary indication for inhaled nitric oxide is to improve oxygenation and reduce the need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in neonates with hypoxic respiratory failure associated with evidence of pulmonary hypertension[3][4]. Nitric oxide may also be used off-label as rescue therapy for severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in adults and children[4]. Major manufacturers include Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals (INOmax), Linde plc, Air Liquide Healthcare, Praxair Inc., Novoteris, Vero Biotech, among others[6].
