Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nitric oxide releasing gel (NORS-Gel) is a topical antifungal therapy being developed for the treatment of superficial fungal infections, including onychomycosis and tinea pedis. The formulation utilizes a proprietary Nitric Oxide Releasing Solution (NORS) technology to deliver nitric oxide (NO), a naturally occurring molecule with potent, broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. NORS-Gel is designed to penetrate keratinized tissues, such as the nail plate and skin, where it exerts fungicidal activity through multimodal mechanisms, including the perforation and structural collapse of fungal cell walls. This non-specific mode of action provides a low risk of developing resistance, making the gel effective against common dermatophytes as well as emerging treatment-resistant strains like *Trichophyton indotineae*. Clinical and ex vivo studies have demonstrated that the gel maintains its efficacy even when applied over nitrocellulose nail polish and can achieve complete fungal clearance in refractory cases.
