Overview

Nitrocefin is a chromogenic cephalosporin substrate primarily used in laboratory settings to detect the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes produced by various bacteria. It contains a beta-lactam ring that is hydrolyzed by beta-lactamases, resulting in a visible color change from yellow (intact) to red (hydrolyzed), which allows for rapid and inexpensive detection of beta-lactamase activity. Nitrocefin does not have antimicrobial properties and is not used therapeutically; its main application is as a diagnostic reagent for identifying bacterial resistance mechanisms related to beta-lactam antibiotics[1][2][4].
