Overview
Nitrofurazone is a topical antibacterial agent belonging to the nitrofuran class. It works by inhibiting several bacterial enzymes involved in the aerobic and anaerobic degradation of glucose and pyruvate, including pyruvate dehydrogenase, citrate synthetase, malate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase, and pyruvate decarboxylase. This interference with bacterial metabolism prevents bacterial growth and multiplication, making it effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Nitrofurazone is primarily used for treating infected burns, wounds, ulcers, and skin infections, particularly when resistance to other agents is a concern.
