Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Furacina is a topical antibiotic ointment containing nitrofurazone (also known as nitrofural), a synthetic nitrofuran derivative. It possesses broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The drug works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, which disrupts bacterial energy production. It is primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of infections in second- and third-degree burns, as well as for skin graft preparation and treating various skin infections. Developed and marketed by Laboratorios SEID, it is formulated at 2 mg/g in an ointment base for topical application.
