Overview

Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless diatomic gas (N2) that serves as a medical gas and a cryogen. In clinical trials, particularly those evaluating inhaled nitric oxide for conditions like acute kidney injury (AKI) following cardiac surgery, nitrogen is used as a blinded control gas to ensure consistent ventilation parameters without the active pharmacological effects of the treatment gas. In its liquid form, nitrogen is used as a cryogen in cryoablation systems (e.g., IceCure Medical's ProSense) to treat malignant and benign tumors in the breast, lung, kidney, and liver by inducing thermal destruction of tissue. It is also used topically in dermatology for superficial cryotherapy to treat conditions like alopecia areata by improving microcirculation through reactive vasodilation.
