Overview

Nitrogen + oxygen (65%/35%) is a specific medical gas mixture developed by Air Liquide SA for use as a control intervention in clinical research. In the Phase II crossover trial NCT01355809, this mixture served as a control comparator to evaluate the effects of a helium/oxygen (Heliox) mixture and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) on exercise capacity in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The mixture provides supplemental oxygen at a fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) of 0.35, with nitrogen serving as the carrier gas. This specific ratio was chosen to match the oxygen concentration of the investigational heliox mixture, allowing researchers to isolate the physiological effects of the carrier gas (helium versus nitrogen) on work of breathing and exercise tolerance, as measured by the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT).
